How Digital Tech Changed Educational Expectations
Technology in education isn't just smart boards in the classroom; it is using technology to educate those who would otherwise go without, it is using technology to bring students of different races, cultures, and countries together, it is using technology to foster cultural bridges that could one day save the world.
"[I]n the years after the 9/11 terrorist attack, some educators began exploring how to promote student voice and global understanding to bring together American's and peoples the Middle East through cross-cultural communication learning experiences," (Tuzel et al. 2017). These educators hoped to encourage cross-cultural understanding through shared experiences, such as service learning projects and working with international students from local universities (Tuzel et al. 2017).
Social media and digital communication technologies have made it easier than ever before to connect American students with international students. According to Tuzel and authors, these kinds of connections can encourage and lead students to learn to care about people who are different from themselves, which can lead to learning to care about, and want to change, the world.
Technology is changing not only the way students learn, but what they learn. Mediocre expectations of cross cultural experiences no longer have to be accepting. Social media and digital technology have changed the standard, cultural ignorance's can be erased, stereotypes broken, and lasting relationships formed.
